The necropolis of Abu Rawash
from the1st Dynasty to the Reign of Radjedef (4thDynasty)
Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Yann Tristant, Paris; auf Englisch
Located on the west bank of the Nile, 8 km northeast of Giza, the site of Abu Rawash lies at the northern edge of the vast Egyptian necropolis of Memphis. The area is currently dominated by the remains of the pyramid of Radjedef, son and immediate successor of the king Khufu (4th Dynasty). However the history of the site is much older than that, since the region is occupied with a series of cemeteries that have developed from the Predynastic period (c. 3200 BCE) through to the Roman times (1st century AD).
This presentation will focus specifically on the period from the 1st to the 4th Dynasty (2900-2500 BCE), as well as the work carried out over the past thirty years by the Institut français d’archéologie orientale (IFAO) on the elite 1st Dynasty cemetery M, the pyramid complex of Radjedef, and the Necropolis F where the king’s sons were buried. It will show that the region of Abu Rawash, long underexplored, is one of the most significant funerary site within the great Memphite necropolis of the Old Kingdom, and continues to provide valuable insights for our understanding of the early history of Egypt.
