Questioning the Library

Gespräch in der Aussstellung Claudia de la Torre. The Questions Library mit der ausstellenden Künstlerin und Robin Waart (auf Englisch).

Ideally a library is more than the sum of its parts — a place for and a collection of books both organized and labyrinthine, accessible and surprising. In reality, libraries are also hierarchical systems of inclusion and exclusion with blind spots and decisions that, so to speak, burn easily.

Claudia de la Torre began her project “The Questions Library” in 2013, for which she has been bringing together, classifying, and exhibiting books that have questions as titles. “The Questions Library” is in the first place an exploration into the collaborative nature of both libraries and books: involving others as participants, accepting donations from anyone “without question” as long as the donated book’s title poses a question itself.

Robin Waart’s “Lakeside Library” is an almost identical copy of the library of Kunstraum Lakeside in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, an unsystematic collection of artist’s books and art theory publications accumulated since the founding of the space in 2005. But, as every library exists as many times as the book with the smallest edition or print run it contains, it is also a “copy” in the other sense of the word, one in a number of reproductions: a version.

Questioning the libraries, Claudia de la Torre and Robin Waart will talk about these ambiguities and this openness, the difference(s) between a collection, a library and an archive, continuing their ongoing discussion about finding books and ways of making books that purposely do not slot into established categories.

Claudia de la Torre (b. 1986 in Mexico City) lives and works in Berlin. She studied Fine Arts at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado “La Esmeralda” in Mexico City and completed her master’s degree at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe with Silvia Bächli. She has had numerous exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad, including at the Kunsthalle Zürich and the Kunsthalle Wien. In 2011, De la Torre founded backbonebooks as an extension of her artistic practice, which serves as a platform for publishing and conceptualizing artists’ books.

Claudia de la Torre’s work is based on the book as a concept and as a possibility. She explores the structures and relationships of surface, form, and ideas. Her work moves at the margins between print media, artists’ books and installations.

Robin Waart’s work begins with the words of others. He uses repetition and collecting as a framework for projects with books, book pages and movie stills to look at what it means to do, ask, and look at, the same thing over and over again. Moving between looking back and moving forward, “repeating” can take the form of doubling, indexing, quotations or footnotes, making sense of miscommunication. The collections of covers, pages, and subtitles center on the structural and personal parameters of writing and speech, such as dedication, love, and beginnings: the reasons why and for whom we make what we make. Waart studied Greek and Latin and art in Amsterdam and The Hague. He lives and works in Amsterdam and publishes his books under the imprint “sm books.”
